CXTech Week 24 2023 News and Analysis

The purpose of this CXTech Week 24 2023 newsletter is to highlight, with commentary, some of the news stories in CXTech this week. What is CXTech?  The C stands for Connectivity, Communications, Collaboration, Conversation, Customer; X for Experience because that’s what matters; and Tech because the focus is enablers.

You can sign up here to receive the CXTech News and Analysis by email or by my Substack. Please forward this on if you think someone should join the list. And please let me know any CXTech news I should include.

Covered this week:

That’s a Wrap for the Open Source Telecom Survey 2023

I closed the survey this morning and hammered through the analysis all day, yep, that’s why the newsletter is late.

Thank you to 168 people who completed this survey with lots of insightful comments, they are great! In 2022 we had 120 responses.

Those that complete the survey are free to use the content in their work, just not to share the whole deck. I’ll make that available in October at TADSummit. People who complete the survey get the edge of this presentation for 4+ months 🙂

The image below’s prompt was, ‘a pengiun giving a survey on the high street to a group of telecom engineers.’ I feel all open source software surveys should be run by penguins. And the clothing of the telecom engineers looks like they are members of a cult, they do believe some crazy stuff 😉

KORE: IoT Market Conditions and Twilio IoT Acquisition

With the recent acquisition of Twilio IoT by KORE Wireless, the IoT market will only see more consolidation. This interview also discusses what makes certain IoT companies succeed and others fail, challenges in the IoT market, and the success model for IoT companies going forward.

In the interview Rohil explains Kore exclusively focuses on IoT, which they believe is necessary for customer success. They bring IoT connectivity, IoT solutions, IoT service, and IoT analytics. Twilio brings a great team and also an industry leading eSIM proposition. They have probably the industry’s leading multi-IMSI proposition in Super SIM. You can see Tobias talking about this at TADSummit, video below and weblog article here, he has also joined KORE.

2023 Cell Phone Plan Overspending Report

This is a fun report that had some of the telecom mind control police in arms. The data is a little too simplified and the savings are spun to make them look massive, “Switching to an MVNO could save you $1,320 a year, or $74k over the course of your lifetime.”

I commented on Allan Rasmussen’s post to this article, and shown below.

As evidence, Carriers are paying $800 to $1000 bonuses to get customers to switch. The numbers ring true for me, my family moved from $180 per month to $60 per month.

In my CXTech newsletter, https://alanquayle.com/2021/10/cxtech-week-43-2021/, I was talking about this. “And the final article of the trio is about $1000 incentives to get families to move mobile carrier, 5G’s role is negligible. US mobile subscribers pay 2-3 times what other developed nations do, so that fat enables massive poaching bonuses.

Customers can jump out of this expensive (for them) poaching frenzy and join an MVNO that focused on value and simplicity. Mint Mobile really is a delight to use, with the bonus they say foxxing a lot, but we know what they really mean 😉 Here’s one of their adverts, that does sum up the industry 🙁”

My worry is like with A2P SMS and TCR, the carriers can squeeze competitors out of business. TCR is discussed here: https://alanquayle.com/2023/06/cxtech-week-23-2023/.
